As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, there’s no better time to embrace the great outdoors and make the most of this wonderful season. I’ve handpicked five fun and healthy activities that promise to keep you active and make your life more vibrant and fulfilling. So let’s dive in, shall we?
Paddleboarding Adventures
Paddleboarding is an incredible full-body workout and an excellent way to connect with nature. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting, this low-impact activity offers a unique blend of cardio and core training while improving balance and coordination. Plus, there’s something truly magical about being out on the water, soaking up the sun, and taking in the stunning scenery.
A few summers ago, I tried paddleboarding for the first time, and I instantly fell in love! I’ll be the first to tell you that I struggled with balance for most of that summer out on the lake. I try to hit the lake at least once a week during the warmer months. Don’t be afraid to try it – you might discover your new favorite workout.
Biking Bliss
Cycling is one of my all-time favorite activities for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Whether you prefer a beach cruiser, a mountain bike, or an eBike, biking is a fantastic way to get outside, enjoy nature, and exercise. Explore your surroundings, burn calories, and strengthen your legs and core with leisurely rides around the neighborhood or challenge yourself on hilly terrain.
My evening rides have become a cherished part of my daily routine when the weather and schedules cooperate. I love discovering new trails and scenic routes on weekends. If you’re not an avid cyclist, don’t worry – find a comfortable pace and enjoy the ride!
Hiking Escapades
Hiking is a versatile and rewarding outdoor activity that caters to all fitness levels. From serene nature walks to challenging mountain treks, there’s something for everyone. Hiking not only keeps you physically active, but it also promotes mental well-being by reducing stress and fostering a sense of accomplishment.
I feel incredibly fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest, where endless hiking opportunities exist. One of my favorite, more challenging trails for an invigorating workout is a local 3.2-mile out-and-back trail. This hike offers a 1,797-foot elevation gain in just 1.6 miles, with the final stretch being especially steep. However, the breathtaking views at the top and the sense of accomplishment make it worthwhile every time. While my husband often joins me on this trail, my kids tend to avoid it. The perfect blend of exercise and nature therapy, this hike never leaves me feeling refreshed and energized.
Outdoor Circuit Training
Why not take advantage of the beautiful weather and move your workouts outdoors? Design a circuit training routine incorporating bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks. Find a local park or backyard, and complete your circuit while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
I’ve found that outdoor workouts boost my mood and connect me more to my environment. Plus, there’s something incredibly satisfying about working up a sweat under the warm sun.
Picnic & Play
Arrange a delightful and healthy picnic with family or friends. Pack your basket with nutritious and delicious snacks like fruits, veggie sticks, hummus, and whole-grain sandwiches. Once you find the perfect spot, dive into lively games like frisbee, soccer, or volleyball, adding physical activity and friendly competition to the mix.
Recently, I’ve enjoyed organizing impromptu gatherings with friends and family at a nearby lake. These events offer fantastic opportunities to socialize, stay active, and appreciate the outdoors, all while deepening connections and making cherished memories.
Happy adventuring, and here’s to a healthy and fun-filled season!
With sunshine and good vibes,
Emily
